One of the Upper Peninsula’s Most Stunning Scenic Hikes
There are hikes that challenge your endurance—and then there are hikes like Sugarloaf Mountain in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula: short, sweet, and absolutely stunning.
Just six miles north of downtown Marquette, Sugarloaf Mountain Natural Area is a local favorite and a must-do for visitors. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just someone looking to stretch your legs and soak in a world-class view, this little mountain packs a panoramic punch.
Finding Sugarloaf Mountain
Getting there is easy. From downtown Marquette, take Washington Street to Fourth Avenue, which turns into Presque Isle Avenue. Head north for about 0.4 miles until you hit Hawley Street, then hang a left. Hawley becomes County Road 550. After about 4 miles, you’ll spot a clearly marked sign for the Sugarloaf Mountain parking lot.
Parking is free, and there are restrooms and informational signs at the trailhead to get you oriented.
The Hike: Choose Your Own Adventure
The trail to the summit is only about a half-mile. But don’t let that fool you—it’s still a workout, depending on the route you choose. There are two trails to choose from “easy” or “difficult.” The easy trail is a gentler, more winding path that takes about 30 minutes. The difficult trail is shorter but steeper and more rugged.
Both trails merge near the top, where a series of wooden staircases lead the final ascent. Rated as a “moderate” hike, it’s doable for most with a decent pair of shoes and a water bottle in tow. Along the way, you’ll pass through a forest that looks like something out of a fairy tale—towering trees, rocky outcroppings, and sunlight filtering through the canopy.
Some hikers have even compared the forested landscape to an Australian rainforest. Not bad for a quick morning outing.
Summit Views That Make the Climb Worth It
At the top there are three well-constructed viewing platforms. Each platform offers a unique and breathtaking view:
- South-facing deck: Gaze out over the city of Marquette, with landmarks like the Superior Dome, the Upper Ore Dock, and Presque Isle Park in full view.
- East-facing deck: Soak in the vast shoreline of Lake Superior, with glimpses of Wetmore Landing and Little Presque Isle Island.
- West-facing platform: Take in the rugged silhouette of the Huron Mountains and Hogsback Mountain stretching off into the distance.
Bring your camera—this is one of those places where even amateur photographers walk away with professional-looking shots.
A Touch of History at the Top
Don’t miss the stone obelisk at the summit, quietly standing in memory of Bartlett King, a local assistant scoutmaster and World War I veteran. The monument, built by members of Boy Scout Troop 1, honors King’s legacy and serves as a touching reminder of the area’s deep community roots. It’s a lovely and unexpected piece of history to encounter at the top of the world.
Extraordinary is closer than you think
Sugarloaf Mountain is proof that you don’t need to trek for miles to reach something extraordinary. With a convenient location, accessible trails, and jaw-dropping views in every direction, it’s no wonder this hike is a Marquette staple.
Whether you’re visiting the area for the first time or returning for your annual UP getaway, make sure Sugarloaf Mountain is on your itinerary. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after your boots are back on flat ground.
